pricking out

PRICKING OUT -- The moving of seedlings from the tray or pot in which they were sown to other receptacles where they can be spaced out individually.

I certainly feel that this is the place we are at with our kids right now. Of course, I always desire for my kids to be individuals, but I feel like we have made a move with our son, placing him out into another receptacle for more individual growth. Having grown up homeschooled, he transitioned this year into public school. It has defiinitely brought about a different type of growth-mostly good.

I know that all children need to have their space to grow in their individual ways. I think it is important to their development as a useful and whole person. I think the bible teaches this in Proverbs where it says "Train up a child in the way he should go..." This means that each child has a different way of training that is more effective for him/her. I have found that with my own children-what works for one may not necessarily work for the other.

Keeping in mind our children's individuality is important in the training and directing of their lives. Allowing others to have influence on our children can also help to stimulate growth at the right times. The individual path of our child as well as the influence of other training grounds can help to promote a healthy, stable path to adulthood.

1 - Individuality, direction and room for growth. It seems to me these are some real benefits of good homeschooling. Now if we could develop them in the public school system as well. Looking back to the time when I went to school they were present, but I think they have become lost. (Comment this)

2 - I don't remember that being a part of the school experience even when I was in school. I do think these are vital to a child's growth... (Comment this)

3 - This transition year has been an interesting and a challenging time for you as your son steps into the public school world. I agree with Terry that some of the advantages of homeschooling used to be present in the public schools and may--on some case--still be present. In so many areas, so-called state and federal accountability mandates force teachers to teach the test, and there's not a lot of leeway there.

You son's success in the new arena is a testimony not only to his growth, but to your teaching.

4 - interesting and challenging to say the least! he does have some good teachers that are helping him, as well as the not so good teachers who have taught him to be accountable and "on his toes"...

thanks for the nice words... (Comment this)

5 - I love the way you have incorporated the analogy of cultivating plants with that of children. You will have to let me know when you get to the part where you have to use pesticide, or have you already done that one? (Comment this)

6 - sire-thanks for stopping by. I am really rather shy about this blog as it is a work in progress. I am right in the middle of raising kids, so not really sure how good my "gardening tips" are! I am just writing to myself mainly!!:) as for pest control, here is a post I wrote last year:
